The Hackergotchi
A Hackergotchi is a stylized avatar consisting of a headshot with the background removed, often featuring a drop shadow to create a "floating head" effect. Popularized within the free and open-source software community. Before social media standardized profile pictures, the term is a portmanteau of hacker and Tamagotchi. These images served as personal branding in technical blogs and documentation, adding a human element to the code and helping community members recognize one another at conferences and meetups.
My own journey in this space reflects that same early open-source spirit, starting at 16 when I developed my own Ubuntu-based distribution. Since then, I have been actively involved in the community through code and translation contributions—specifically with projects like Phatch and Epidermis—maintaining a consistent presence in the ecosystem since I was 18.
